It All Adds Up...

Introductory image of trip participants

On a cold and frosty January morning, Mrs. Brissenden, Mrs. Gadd, and twelve Year 9 female mathematicians set off by train to Oxford for the It All Adds Up event at the Mathematics Institute at Oxford University.

Sunday was spent exploring two museums—the Ashmolean and the Natural History Museum—visiting Magdalen College, where the highlights included spotting deer, and enjoying the views of frozen streams and meadows, and trying Japanese pancakes!

On Monday, the event, which aims to promote women in mathematics, saw the girls attending talks on the fluid dynamics of chocolate fountains and knot theory, learning how mathematics is applied in various professions, and participating in a problem-solving workshop. The day also provided an opportunity for the Dane Court students to speak with undergraduates and quiz them about studying mathematics at Oxford.

A very brisk walk was needed to catch the train back to Thanet, but a thoroughly good time was had by all.
