Building bridges to Germany

Building bridges to Germany

On Thursday 29 February 2024, we hosted 30 students and their teachers from the Heisenberg Gymnasium in Karlsruhe in Germany.

It was a great opportunity for our students to get to know young people from Germany, and to learn about each other's school experiences. The students were buddied up with 30 volunteers from our Year 10 German students and enjoyed a day in the life of a year 10 Dane Court student. Despite the differences in the school day, the lack of uniform in Germany and the early starts over there, the students discovered that they all had more in common than they had perhaps previously thought. The German students went to a range of lessons with their buddies, joining in with English lessons about "A Christmas Carol", showing where they came from in Geography and discussing stereotypes in German. We were very impressed with their level of English. The last session of the day involved building bridges out of spaghetti, sellotape and blu-tack: a great exercise in communication and team work! Our students very much enjoyed the day too, and we now have an open invitation for a return visit to their school in Karlsruhe: one for the future perhaps!

Developing knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world.
