On a wild Monday evening, punctuated by squally wintery showers, Dane Court Grammar School’s girls contested the county cup final at Margate’s Hartsdown stadium. Although the overhead conditions were challenging the rain encouraged passing on the superbly presented pitch. Having battled through several rounds the Dane Court girls faced hot favourites Rainham Girls for the trophy.
The game was full of excellent endeavour and skill from both sides, with the standard of play unsurprisingly good from the two best sides in the county. Although chances were few and far between as both defences held sway, the three goals had the mark of enterprise and quality. Unfortunately all three goals came from the visitors who took the title of county champions at the conclusion of an otherwise evenly matched contest.
However the Dane Court girls can justifiably hold their heads high, having played with determination to produce their best performance of the season against deserved winners.
Dane Court and Kent Schools FA would like to thank Margate Football Club for generously allowing the final to be played on their ground and the hospitality on the evening, hosted by Ryan Day. Also grateful thanks go to the ball and match sponsors, Dr and Mr Napier, Mr and Mrs Barnett of the Racing Greyhound and finally Mr and Mrs Fisher of Fisher Transport. Special thanks to the 200 or so supporters who braved the arctic conditions to give noisy but sporting encouragement to both sides.
