Dane Court’s Digital Leaders, together with XMA/Google, put on the annual Technology Hour showcasing and demonstrating the latest tried and tested educational technology. The Digital Leaders are students from across the school with a shared enthusiasm for cutting edge technology and collaboration.
Modelling itself upon the famous BETT Education Technology Exhibition, the arrangement of the various stands in the theatre was designed and set up well in advance of the event.. Inevitably, there was a stand showcasing the timeless competition between Apple and Android with iPads, Chromebooks and smartphones to test.
Earlier in the year, the Digital Leaders engaged in the ‘Battle of the Tablets’ so students were already aware of their various strengths and weaknesses. E-Safety is an increasingly important area and visitors were encouraged to download the free ‘Where’s My Droid’ app or the ‘Where’s My iPhone’ app so that the common problem of losing phones is reduced. One of the most exciting stands was the Virtual Reality area which demonstrated Google Cardboard headsets as well as more expensive versions. Students and staff crowded around ‘seeing’ other worlds and going on historical or geographical expeditions which might be part of the educational world in years to come. Of course there were the usual ‘Top Apps’ and IBDP Extended Essay stands giving advice on how to make the most of the technology available to engage in learning or successfully complete assessments.
To make the event more interactive, there was a Quick Response (QR) Code Quiz and after scanning the QR code on each stand, everyone could enter the competition to win a prize donated by Google/ EMA. The lucky winner has been picked at random and will be announced in the relevant assembly.
The event was a huge success being bigger and better than the previous two years. Mrs Weale has run Digital Leaders for over three years encouraging Digital Gurus and Digital Leaders. Unfortunately, it is her last year as our leader and we're all glad that she came up with the idea of bringing Digital Leaders into the school as it has been a highly effective way of pushing out new digital concepts. These include embedding BYOD, which has probably been our biggest success over the last few years. The event really allowed everyone to get an insight into the direction to which technology is heading.
This has been the Digital Leaders’ last big event for this academic year, so we would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a great summer and we look forward to seeing you in September! If you want any advice on devices (iPads, Android tablets, Chromebooks or apps) please do not hesitate to contact the school and your request will be forwarded to our team of Digital Leaders.
